The SAFE Training Method™
Train Your Dog Using the Science of Learning
Teaching your dog new skills is like building muscles—it requires proper technique and consistent practice. At Heeli, our SAFE Training Method™ is a science-based approach that helps your dog learn to respond reliably and confidently to commands.
The SAFE Training Method Explained
The SAFE Training Method is a step-by-step guide to effective communication with your dog. Each letter in SAFE represents a key step in the process:
S: Signal - A signal is the verbal, visual, or sensory cue that tells your dog what action to perform (e.g., "sit" or "come"). Signals should be simple and represent only one action.
A: Action - After giving a signal, give your dog time to respond. Use the 5-Mississippi Rule: pause for 5 seconds, allowing your dog to process the cue and decide what to do. During this time, remain still and patient.
F: Feedback - Provide immediate feedback to your dog based on their response:
-
Correct actions: Use positive reinforcement, such as a feedback word ("Good dog!") followed by a high-value treat. Over time, the treat can be phased out as your dog associates the feedback word with success.
-
Incorrect actions: Use a gentle correction sound like "Eh-eh!" This isn’t harsh but signals that the action wasn’t correct.
E: Effect - By consistently following the S-A-F steps, your dog learns what is expected and builds confidence in their abilities. With practice, they’ll respond more quickly and reliably.
Avoid Common Mistakes
-
Don’t Repeat Signals: Repeating a command like "sit, sit, sit" teaches your dog to respond on the third cue, not the first. Instead, give them time to process.
-
Don’t Combine Signals: For clarity, avoid saying "Max, sit!" when first teaching commands. Use one signal at a time.
-
Be Patient: Always give five full seconds for your dog to process and respond. They need time to recall the signal and decide how to act.
The Daily Workout Routine
Consistency is key to mastering new skills. Practice the SAFE steps with every command, starting in quiet, distraction-free environments. Gradually introduce distractions to help your dog generalize the behavior to real-life situations.
Pro Tips for Practice:
-
Focus on 1-2 commands at a time.
-
Practice each command 30-40 times daily, divided into 2-3 short sessions.
-
Build on your dog’s successes to increase their confidence and reliability.
By committing to the SAFE Training Method and regular practice, your dog will become a more confident and well-behaved companion.
